Synthesis, together with Afrika Tikkun Services awarded certificates to 23 unemployed youth at a graduation ceremony held virtually on Tuesday 7 April, 2020. The learners, who reside in disadvantaged communities across Johannesburg, successfully completed Synthesis’ learnership programme, graduating with an NQF Level 5 in IT Systems Development, accredited by the Media Information and Communication Technologies Sector Education and Training Authority (MICT SETA).
The 12-month training programme, which incorporates both practical and theoretical computer proficiency training, is an annual initiative that commenced in May 2017 with the first intake of learners. Through the training initiative, Synthesis, Afrika Tikkun Services and Grow Right Edge Solutions equipped unemployed youth, some of whom are disabled, with advanced computing and computer systems skills.
Synthesis’ talent acquisitions team is committed to assisting the learners with the tools and skillset that they can use to secure employment. The learners were trained on interview etiquette and CV creation to assist them in attaining their dream jobs.
The build up to the virtual graduation ceremony buzzed with excitement. The learners prepared and shared the link to the YouTube video which began with a traditional address by Jakes Shepherd, Synthesis Founder and Director, to the graduates. Pictures of each graduate were featured in order to personalise the event.
Shepherd also had the honour of presenting two special awards – Top Academic Achiever and Top Student. The Top Academic Achiever was awarded to Senzo Happy Chinsana for the best academic performance in the course. The Top Student Award was awarded to Mellisa Morgan; the learners’ performance was measured on academic achievement, time keeping, teamwork and perseverance.
“It has been an honor to be part of the learnerships in partnership with Afrika Tikkun Services. We look forward to more joined initiatives where we take technology to the youth and train them as they grow into our future leaders”, says Sue-Ann Huyser, Synthesis General Manager.
“Learnerships are an integral part of our commitment to skills development and transformation in South Africa. Over the long term, Synthesis strives to empower unemployed youth with qualifications and necessary computer skills to enable these youth to seek employment opportunities”, explains Michael Shapiro, Synthesis Managing Director
“Together with Afrika Tikkun Services, the learners and Grow Right Edge solutions we can safely say we have made tremendous strides towards this endeavour”, concludes Huyser.
